After approximately 100 years, the exterior panels have taken on a beautifully rich, darkened patina of age , are full of figured, patterned grain, and are crowned by stunning sliding panel doors of mesmerizing whorls from what is probably a prized rootwood cut, or else, a thick trunk-piece with outstanding rings. Of hundreds of Japanese tansu I reviewed, this was the most unique and beautiful of its kind (Paulownia blondewood-class with sleek, non-ornate hardware), and has been a cherished piece for many years.
Unlike many of these older pieces, THIS CHEST SMELLS FRESH AS THE DAY IT WAS MADE, AND HAS ABSOLUTELY ZERO MOLD, MILDEW, OR ANY AGED SMELL WHATSOEVER!! It comes from a lifetime in a dry climate with humidity control and very careful family care with perfect treatment & cleaning. THIS TANSU IS IMMACULATE - NO BUGS , NO ODORS , NO BREAKS , NO PROBLEMS - READY TO USE!! No structural issues - sturdy, strong, holds a full load - in perfect working order.11 drawers and 2 sliding doors with hand-made compartments, 2 additional inner drawers, and shelves. PLEASE LOOK AT THE PHOTO OF THE DRAWER INTERIORS, WHICH KEPT FROM OXIDATION, ARE A GLEAMING BLONDEWOOD!!
Like the ancient mesoamerican temples that dumbfounded Western archaeologists with their mortarless construction (enabled by brilliant & painstaking placement & crafting of interlocking stones so perfectly matched that they fit like a jigsaw puzzle), the Japanese craftsmen (more artists than artisans) who made the BEST tansu from the late 19th to early 20th century were able to hand-fashion each panel and piece of wood and drawer so that each fit only in its prescribed place (hence, the calligraphic drawer numbering) , with minimal joining hardware of any kind. In fact, practically the only metal on this stunning piece consists of decorative corner-protecting covers (in black), the heavy solid iron drawer handles (pulls), and the traditional solid iron side-handles that historically enabled portability of these practical masterpieces in the kind of cattle-drawn carts & pushcarts that would've traversed the Tokaido and Kisokaido roads the historic samurai & merchant class traveled along as their routes, at times heeding the calls of Shogunates and Imperial mandates. In every way - style, function, aesthetic, spirit - the tansu embodies something essentially Japanese , an intimate cultural landmark of domestic life that - when rendered so finely as in this unique piece - stands as a powerful design statement bursting its seams with magical purpose and historic depth. A fabulous piece that will be at home in any decor. Keep in mind this is a large and fragile piece of furniture.
