Antique (c. 1840) Edo Era Japanese 12 Drawer Choba- Tansu Chest Document Chest

Known as a choba -dansu (accounting or document chest), this tansu chest was made 180 years ago in the late Edo Era c. There 12 drawers in all, three of which are behind the lower sliding doors and one additional hidden secret drawer that can only be accessed by removing the two lower doors and revealing the hidden drawer.

Side carrying stirrup handles aided it moving this chest even when full of personal possessions (see pictures 8 & 9). Hinoki (cypress) face with sugi (cryptomeria) case and interiors.

Wood peg construction (see picture 10). All the hardware is made of forged iron including the warabite (fern hand) style handles have a protective burnt lacquer finish. There are double action locks and thick side stirrup side handles for ease of mobility (see pictures 6 and 7).

This chest has a near two century old warm aged patina and remains in fine original antique condition. It should serve one well for another century of use or two. All drawers slide easily without binding as do the four sliding doors. This choba-dansu measures 35 3/4" wide by 37" high by 14 1/4 deep (90.8x 94 x 36.2 cm).

A great piece of Japanese history and an interesting. Piece of furniture with lots of character. If you are looking for a fine all original and rare document tansu chest this is the one for you.

The last picture is taken from the book Tansu by Ty Heineken. Page 147 of his book features an almost identical document chest showing how to access the hidden section by removing the two lower doors.
