This is a very rare late Edo vintage c. (apothecary chest) with a unique arrangement of 24 small divided drawers and a long drawer at the bottom for a total of 25 drawers. All of the smaller drawers are divided inside for a total of 49 sections. This type of chest was used by an early (Edo era) pharmacy to store various herbal medicines. This kusuridansu has a sugi (cryptomeria) wood case with all kiri (paulownia) wood face and drawer interiors.(see picture 10 & 11). Great skill was used in the workmanship in this chest with wooden pin pegged box joinery (see last picture).
This chest has been well used yet well loved, with the exception of a few minor signs of past use some stains on the top (see picture 4 & 7). All drawers run smoothly and the top lidded section swings open and closed with ease.
Please enjoy viewing the enlarged photos of this chest. This chest measures 18 3/4" wide by 7 1/4" deep and 16 high (47.5 x 19 x 41.5 cm).
