ANTIQUE JAPANESE EDO ERA (c. 1780) 2 DRAWER SUZURIBAKO CALLIGRAPHY TANSU CHEST
This is an antique Japanese mid Edo Era c. Two drawer (with lidded top section). (portable calligraphy tansu) made of solid paulownia. Suzuribako were used as portable accounting chests (the forerunner of the attache case). Also known as a calligraphy chest as it housed an ink stone, brushes, ink stick, and paper.

This chest still has its original deep over two century old patina finish. T he method of construction as well as all the forged iron work o.

N this chest dates it to the mid Edo Era c. All drawer handles, hinges, and latches as well as every nail are made of thick hand forged iron with a protective coat of burnt lacquer. The lock plate on the top drawer is a more recent replacement, keeping with the aesthetics of the period (see picture 4). The lidded top section was for the storage and use of suzuri (ink stone) and brushes.

The lidded top swings open to reveal the area where the ink stone was once housed. The coins shown in picture 9 is also included with this listing. The lidded top opens by pushing the button (see picture 11) and closes securely when the lid is closed and the latch is pushed.

T he top handle is still very secure. And provides a convenient way to transport this chest.

Both drawers open and close smoothly. The three hinged lidded top swing. S, opens and closes easily. With exception of minor signs of past use (see enlarged pictures) and the replaced lock plate as mentioned, t. Chest measures 9 1/2" wide by 12 1/2" deep by 9 3/8 tall (24.1 x 31.8 x 23.8 cm).

A very warm accent for your home or office. Great to hold pens, as well as, remote controls for the TV and stereo.
