Japanese Antique Clothing Chest Isho Tansu Tsuruoka style Japan Cabinet. This is a black-lacquered tansu produced in Tsuruoka. The drawers were used for everyday clothing and the small hinged door at the bottom right was for storing valuables.

The design of this tansu, with auspicious symbols scattered over a black base, is similar to that of a wedding kimono. This type of old-fashioned elegance appealed to the conservative inhabitants of the castle town of Tsuruoka. The tastes of the people in the castle towns tended to be more sophisticated, more cultured. The black-lacquered produces a softer feel with auspicious symbol designs on the drawer pulls, locks which provide the main attraction of tansu. The symbol designs are: pine, bamboo, crane and turtle with pine. Two large drawers on the lest side. A single hinged door on the right side with three drawers. There is a small hidden box in the backside of small drawer, in the hinged door. Three keys for larger drawers, hinged door and inner small drawer. Massive and well made metallic features representing pine, bamboo, crane.

To lock the hinged-door on the right side corner, one's needs to pull the round washer on the left side. To lock the drawers, one's needs to pull up the round washer. Area: Yamagata Shonai - Japan.
