This is an early Taisho era vintage c. (samurai sword stand) with a unique arrangement of four drawers of various sizes for storage of sword fittings and oils.
This sword tansu is made of keyaki (zelkova) burl wood with kiri (paulownia) wood drawer interiors (see picture 8). The removable top sword stand fits (holds) virtually any samurai sword. The top sword stand is fully removable and assembles on the top in three pieces (see picture 9). Each of the side racks have a dovetailed sliding base that fits into the reverse dovetail track on the top of the chest (see picture 10). This chest has been well used yet well loved, and it remains, with exception of limited past signs of use and some very minor restoration, in very fine condition.
All drawers run smoothly and the top sword fitting will accommodate any size samurai sword. This chest measures 21" wide by 11" deep by 9 1/2 high (53 x 28 x 24 cm). With sword fitting it measures a total of 18 high (46 cm). Made with old world craftsmanship wooden pin construction (see picture 11).
Very solidly built, a great piece of Japanese history; and also makes a great jewelry box or a classic desk top organizer today.
